1824: The presidential election was turned over to the U.S. House of Representatives for a decision because none of the five candidates had received a majority in the electoral college; John Quincy Adams was eventually chosen president over Andrew Jackson (who had won the most votes) and William H. Crawford.

1843: A Christmas Carol, the classic tale by Charles Dickens of a miser redeemed, was published.

1823: The poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas," which begins "'Twas the night before Christmas," was published anonymously in a Troy, N.Y., newspaper; though the poet has long been thought to be Clement Clarke Moore, controversy exists over the authorship.
